The Intern Health Study represents a comprehensive longitudinal cohort investigation focused on assessing stress and mood dynamics among medical interns across various institutions in the United States. This significant initiative enrolls approximately 1,500 new interns annually and is endorsed by reputable organizations such as the National Institute of Mental Health (R01 MH101459), the University of Michigan Depression Center, and the Taubman Medical Institute.

To facilitate data collection for this study, the Intern Health Study app has been developed as a specialized research tool.

The app gathers data through several methods:

<ul>
 <li>Surveys: Participants engage in an initial survey lasting approximately 20 minutes, followed by short quarterly follow-up surveys of about 5 minutes each. These surveys encompass inquiries related to personality traits, stressful life events, and levels of depression.</li>
 <li>Daily Mood Monitoring: Participants receive notifications on their iPhones that prompt them to rate their daily mood on a scale from 1 to 10.</li>
 <li>Fitbit Usage: A select group of participants will utilize a Fitbit Charge 2 device to monitor daily physical activity and sleep patterns. Data regarding steps taken, sleep duration, and mood from the past week will be displayed on the app's Dashboard.</li>
 <li>Location Tracking: To obtain an objective measure of physical activity, participants will be asked for permission to access their iPhone's "frequent locations" data collected via GPS, which includes latitude, longitude, and timestamps. It is important to note that persistent use of GPS in the background may significantly impact battery life.</li>
</ul>

The design of this study prioritizes the security and confidentiality of all participant information provided.

Access to the application requires a unique access code, which participants will receive upon invitation to join the study.
